After Mariota was pushed around by Stanford on Thursday, finishing 20/34 with 250 yards and two touchdowns in Oregons Title hope-crushing defeat, hes going to need a poor performance or two from the remaining frontrunners to have a shot at the most coveted individual trophy in college sports. Fred Warner Jersey . -- Chicago manager Darold Butler has a message for the Windy City.BALTIMORE -- Ubaldo Jimenezs miserable season worsened Friday when the Baltimore Orioles right-hander was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained right ankle. Jimenez twisted his ankle in a parking lot at his apartment complex on Wednesday. "We were looking at it today and its pretty puffy, taped up," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said Friday. "We were hoping it would resolve somewhat today. Did not." The move is retroactive to July 6, the day after Jimenez made his last start. Jimenez, 30, was scheduled to pitch against the New York Yankees on Saturday. He will be replaced by either Chris Tillman or Kevin Gausman. Very little has gone right this season for Jimenez after he signed a $50 million, four-year deal during the off-season. Hes 3-8 with a 4.52 ERA overall and 1-4 with a 5.79 ERA at home. Jimenez appeared to be back on track after he gave up an unearned run in eight innings aggainst Texas on June 30. Steve DeBerg Jersey . But he didnt last long in his last start, walking six against Boston before being yanked after 3 2-3 innings. The ankle sprain is not a first for Jimenez. "He had it in 2012," Showalter said. "The only reason I asked him that is I wanted to know how quickly it healed. Anybody whos rolled their ankle, they know once you do it once, it kind of falls on a similar pattern. And he did it pitching. They shut him down the last two or three starts in 2012." By being placed on the DL on Friday, Jimenez gets the benefit of being inactive at the same time the Orioles are on break for the All-Star game. "If it wasnt for the All-Star break, we might wait a couple days," Showalter said. "But its also the same ankle as 2012, and with ankles, Ive learned that you kind of take a look at the history with them. Its a lot weaker every time you put it in peril." ' ' '
VANCOUVER - Jeff Tedford has returned to the CFL. Ozzie Albies Jersey . Tedford, who played six seasons as a quarterback from 1983-88 with Hamilton, Calgary, Saskatchewan, and Winnipeg, was named head coach of the B.C. Lions Friday. He replaces Mike Benevides in the position. Benevides was fired following B.C.s 50-17 loss to the Montreal Alouettes in the East Division semifinal. Tedford, 53, previously worked as an assistant under Lions general manager Wally Buono in Calgary from 1989-91. Ive always had fond memories and a soft spot in my heart for the CFL, both as a player and a coach, said Tedford during a late afternoon news conference at the Lions practice facility. I had great times doing both. Tedford helped the Stampeders reach the Grey Cup in 1991. The next season, he was hired as an offensive assistant at Fresno State where, as a quarterback for two seasons, he had set records for passing yardage (4,872) and touchdowns (35). He was later promoted to offensive co-ordinator at Fresno State (1993-97) and held the same position at Oregon (1998-2001) before he became the head coach at the University of California. He was named the Pac-10s top coach twice and led the Golden Bears to a conference title in 2006. Earlier this year, Tedford was hired to be the Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive co-ordinator but left the team during the pre-season to undergo a heart procedure. That ultimately resulted in the two sides mutually agreeing to end his NFL deal, making Tedford available to join the Lions. While at Cal, Tedford tutored future NFL quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers, Trent Dilfer, David Carr, Akili Smith, Joey Harrington and Kyle Boller. Tedford says he is looking forward to developing a stable of young quarterbacks in B.C., which includes Rodgers younger brother Jordan and holdover Travis Partridge as well as veteran Travis Lulay, who sat out most of the 2014 season with a shoulder injury. The Lions finished last season 9-9, making the playoffs as the cross-over team in the East Division. Tedford says he came away very impressed from a meeting with Lulay this week and plans to work with him closely as he continues his recovery, which the coach views as critical to the teams success. Im very anxious to work with him closer, said Tedford. Thankfully, hes close enough to get here on a consistent basis, where we can visit. Tedford says he is also eager to organize his coaching staff and get to know veteran players. He was non-committal on the future of assistants, saying he had to discuss their goals with them and consider others with whom he has worked. But he wants to ensure that the Lions coaching staff has a considerable amount of CFL experience. After more than two decades away from the CFL, he does not believe it will be too difficult to reacquaint himself with three-down football. While I havent been following it that closely to understand all of the nuances of whats going on, I will get back into that very quickly, Tedford said. Ill watch a lot of tape. The Lions came under criticism last season for an inconsistent offence led by 14-year veteran quarterback Kevin Glenn, who has since been released. While Tedford is known for tutoring quarterbacks and offensive expertise, he wants to make sure the Lions excel on offence, defence and special teams. I believe its important to be solid in all three phases, he said. Im not going to be so worried about the past, Im really not. Im just focused on the future. Tedford has been spending the week in the Vancouver area getting familiar with the city. The late afternoon press conference was designed to accommodate his wife Donna, a Calgary native, who was eager to attend but had to fly in from Tampa Bay earlier in the day. The Tedfords, whose two sons were born in Calgary, are looking forward to resuming their life in Canada and having the chance to spend more time with Donnas family. This is a great opportunity because of where it is, he said. My wife can come back to Canada. My kids can come back to Canada. The new Lions coach called the move a lifestyle decision after he had two stents installed in his heart. He has been good to go for a couple of months. I have as much energy now as Ive ever had, Tedford said, adding he is focusing on exercising regularly and eating right. He and Buono took part in an official contract signing during the news conference. Tedford says the deal is only for two years, because the Lions did not offer a longer term. Insurance is one thing, but I wouldnt have moved my family 3,000 miles if I didnt feel pretty good about (the opportunity), he said. Tedford says he took the job because of his relationship with Buono and respect for the Lions franchise, which he always felt was difficult to play against. Buono, who kept in contact with Tedford over the years, says he is looking forward to having his former protege back in the fold and pleased with having someone who has built a solid career as a good advertisement for the CFL. But both Buono and Tedford dismissed the idea that the hiring was about helping the Lions rebuild. This is professional football and professional football is, and always will be, about winning, said Buono. Mark Melancon Jersey . Foxboro, MA (SportsNetwork. Panthers Jerseys China .com) - Whatever adjustments the New England Patriots made at halftime sure worked. Tom Brady threw a pair of touchdown passes during a 24-point third quarter, as New England clinched its sixth straight AFC East title with a 41-13 victory over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday at Gillette Stadium. LeGarrette Blount also ran for a score during the dominant stanza, as the Patriots turned a tenuous one-point lead into a laugher. It just didnt go quite how we wanted it to in the first half but we did a good job responding, Brady said. So it was a great win. Brady finished the game 21-of-35 passing for 287 yards with the two scores and an interception. Rob Gronkowski, held without a reception in the first half, caught three passes for 96 yards with a score for New England (11-3), which gained a split of the season series with Miami. The Dolphins (7-7) saw their already slim playoff hopes dashed further with a second straight loss. Ryan Tannehill completed 29-of-47 passes for 346 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions for Miami, which had beaten New England in the season opener 33-20. The Dolphins outscored the Patriots 23-0 in the second half of that game and had the tables turned to a tune of 27-0 in the final 30 minutes of this one. After an acrobatic touchdown catch by Mike Wallace in the closing seconds of the first half pulled Miami within 14-13, the Patriots blew it open in the third quarter. New England marched 79 yards for a touchdown after the opening kickoff of the second half. Gronkowski hauled in a 34-yard pass to ignite the eight-play series, which Brady keyed with a 17-yard scramble on 3rd-and-11. Blount scored from the three on the next play. After the Dolphins went three-and-out, the Patriots tacked on a 35-yard Stephen Gostkowski field goal to extend the margin to 24-13 with 4:43 left in the third. Patrick Chung then picked off a deflected Tannehill pass on the first play after the kickoff and the Patriots cashed in immediately when Brady found Gronkowski with a perfect seam throw for a 27-yard touchdown. Another Miami three-and-out was followed by a three-play, 47-yard New England touchdown drive. Gronkowski caught a 35-yard pass on the second play and Brady followed with a 6-yard TD pass to Julian Edelman on the next play to increase the cushion to 38-13. Miami managed just seven plays and 15 yards on its first three offensive possessions in the third quarter. The Patriots sandwiched a 36-yard Gostkowski field goal with 6:20 remaining around two Miami possessions that ended in downs deep in New England territory. New England captured its 12th division title in the last 14 years. The only other winners were the New York Jets in 2002 and the Dolphins in 2008. The Patriots also control their destiny for home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs, needing only to win their final two games against the Jets and Buffalo Bills. The Dolphins, trying to at least delay the inevitable, opened the game with a deep pass on the first play as Wallace hauled in the slightly underthrown ball for a 50-yard gain to the New England 30. But the Patriots stiffened and forced a field goal attempt that was blocked by Jamie Collins. Kyle Arrington scooped up the ball and raced 62 yards for a touchdown and a quick 7-0 lead. Obviously the game started on a good positive play for us and we werent able to capitalize, said Dolphins coach Joe Philbin. They made a play and we didnt do a good job of protecting. ... You have to capitalize on those opportunities. We have to play 60 minutes of football. You cant make the mistakes that we made. After a Miami punt, New England drove into Dolphins territory with its first offensive series, but Brady had a pass deflected and intercepted by Miamis Jason Trusnik. The turnover led to a 24-yard field goal by Caleb Sturgis to make it 7-3 late in the first quarter. Duron Harmon picked off a poorly thrown ball by a rushed Tannehill at the New England 32 and returned the interception 60 yards to the Miami 8-yard line midway through the second quarter. Shane Vereen scored from the three just three plays later to increase the advantage to 14-3. The Dolphins answered with a 53-yard Sturgis field goal thanks to a defensive pass interference penalty that kept the drive alive. Miami used all three timeouts on defense in the final minute of the half and a 32-yard punt return by Jarvis Landry gave the Dolphins possession at the New England 32 with 11 seconds to play. The Dolphins went to the end zone on the first play and a brilliant catch by Wallace was initially ruled incomplete before being overturned by replay for a touchdown to make it 14-13 at the break. PITTSBURGH -- Expanded instant replay has a new fan in Starling Marte. At least, that is, when the Pittsburgh Pirates are on the right side of it. The speedy outfielder was called out, then ruled safe on a replay review with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, lifting the Pirates over San Francisco 2-1 Tuesday night and ending the Giants six-game winning streak. It was 1-all when Marte tripled off the right-field wall against Tim Hudson. Marte slid into third, got up and bolted home when the relay from second baseman Ehire Adrianza skipped by third baseman Pablo Sandoval for an error. Sandoval recovered to throw home and plate umpire Quinn Wolcott initially ruled Marte was tagged by San Francisco catcher Buster Posey. A brief review showed Martes right hand touched the plate before Poseys glove swiped Martes chest. Marte joked he likes replay "sometimes" but never doubted which way the call would go one the umpires took a longer look. "I know I was safe," Marte said. "It was just about waiting for the umpire to make the decision." Pirates manager Clint Hurdle raced out of the dugout to challenge the call. He wasnt sure at the time whether Marte was safe for not, but figured Marte deserved the benefit of the doubt. "Its an aggressive play," Hurdle said. "We continue to talk about being aggressive. We cant use the safety brakes." A night after rallying from a six-run deficit to win a five-hour, 13-inning marathon, the Giants were stunned when Martes drive and Adrianzas miscue ruined an otherwise spectacular effort from Hudson (4-2). The veteran right-hander allowed two runs on five hits in 8 2-3 innings, striking out five and walking one. The only Pirate to advance past second base over the final seven innings was Marte. "Replay is going to provide the final conclusion," Hudson said. "It is what it is and youve got to accept it. But its frustrating to be to the end of a call that cost you the ballgame. Ive seen calls that were closer than that but werent overturned." Tony Watson (3-0) worked around two singles in the ninth to earn the win. Marte scored both Pittsburgh runs and Ike Davis added two hits as the Pirates won ffor just the fourth time in their last 13 games. Frank Vatrano Jersey . Pittsburgh starter Charlie Morton pitched eight sparkling innings, giving up one unearned run and three hits, walking two and striking out three. "The pitches he made to the top four hitters, theyre as good as Ive seen him make," Hurdle said. "He had those guys, there were some hard at-bats. There was good pitching. He hit his spots, changed his speed." Both teams were looking for length out of their starters after San Franciscos 11-10 the night before left their bullpens taxed. Going deep into games hasnt been a problem for Hudson, who worked with his typical efficiency while giving the relievers some needed down time. The 38-year-old has thrown at least seven innings in all seven of his starts this season. He had little trouble getting through eight innings, keeping the Pirates off-balance with his typically impeccable control. Marte reached on an infield single with one out in the second and moved to third on a single just inside the first-base bag by Davis before scoring on a groundout by Tony Sanchez. San Franciscos only run came in the second as Sanchezs throwing issues from behind the plate resurfaced. Brandon Belt hit a leadoff single, stole second and moved to third when Sanchezs throw sailed into shallow centre field. Belt scored on Adrianzas sacrifice fly. NOTES: Pirates LHP Wandy Rodriguez was rocked in his second rehab start while recovering from right knee inflammation.
